Snow

Today our Grade Five classroom began to discuss our wonderful sharing and learning project. They learned about Mme Amanda's students in Africa and read through the blog posts. They were then asked to discuss and brainstorm ideas regarding what they would like to share with our new friends. It was unanimous that they wanted you to learn about SNOW!

During the winter here in Winnipeg, Canada, our temperatures drop to way below zero, everything freezes and we have a lot of snow on the ground.

This is Mme Boyko and three girls in a snow fort. Our students LOVE digging in the snow and stacking blocks to make snow forts on the playground.

Here is a picture of a boy making a snow angel. A snow angel is when you lie down and move your hands and feet in the snow. It works better when you have fresh snow. Snow angels are lots of fun but be careful not to wreck it because when you stand up you have to move really
quickly!

Finally, here's a group enjoying the freshness of snow. Have a look at what we are wearing. Do you think we could toss the freezing cold snow around if we weren't wearing all the winter gear you see here? If we went outside in winter in just our t-shirts and shorts, we would freeze! So, we have to wear jackets and snow pants, plus mittens and a tuque on our heads, to stay warm. It takes a very long time to get all ready to go outside, but it's worth it because we love playing in the snow!

(A special thanks to some Grade Four students who helped me write the captions for the above pictures. They even typed them on the blog themselves!)

Two Classrooms Learning and Sharing

This past week, two more of our classrooms got together to learn about our collaboration with Mme Amanda and the children from Nabwigulu Primary School. We shared the information from the blog using the Smartboard and Google Earth. The students discussed the differences and similarities between our two schools and are very excited to learn more. They have many, many questions about what life is like in Uganda, Africa compared to what life is like here in Winnipeg, Canada. They are eager to tell you about themselves and created art projects that represent their lives here.

These are a few photos of our teachers, Mme Lachance with one of her students working on his art project, Mme Noel and two of her students, as well as Mme Hussey, our Principal with a Grade Four student. In all the photos, the students are working on their art projects and their work represents their lives here. Once the art projects are complete, students will write letters to our friends in Uganda.

As the students worked on their art projects, they were asked what they were learning and why they think this collaboration is important. Their responses were truly inspiring!

The children expressed that they are really excited to be learning about what sorts of things children from Africa do at school and at home, compared to the many activities they are involved in. They are curious about what sports and games are played and wanted Mme Amanda's students to learn about what hockey is. They also wondered how they could help because they have so many things (school supplies, sports equipment, etc...) and they would like to share.

And, they are happy to be "making new friends."

Time for sharing!

Each year at this time, and following Report Cards, parents are invited to come to school with their children to celebrate their learning. This is a photo of a Grade 3 student with his Dad in his classroom. He is eagerly sharing some Math work that he can do using the Smartboard.

In this photo, our Grade 4/5 teacher is meeting with a parent and her son in the classroom. They are talking about all the work he has been doing since the beginning of the school year.

These "Celebrations" are an excellent opportunity for our students to showcase all the hard work they've done and what they have learned. Parents also really enjoying visiting the classroom and sharing in their child's school experiences.

Making Crafts with Grade Ones

Here we are busy making some crafts. Two of our Grade One classrooms, 46 students, got together with the help of a parent, Mme Hernandez and Mme Hussey, to make ornaments using clay. It was a very, very messy project, but everyone LOVED it!
Our goal was to make a variety of ornaments that we will sell to raise money for the purpose of purchasing some school supplies to send over to Mme Amanda to share with you.
